As senior program officer for Our Empowered Youth, Michael works closely with community-based organizations to move Oregon towards a just and equitable system – a system that meets the educational needs of all of Oregon’s diverse and amazing students. He does this by centering the voices and experiences of young people, to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

A lifelong learner, Michael leans on community expertise for guidance. He wants to keep an open and humble mind to continue learning about people’s issues, histories and journeys.

Young people inspire him. Their energy and talents encourage him to work hard to lay the foundation for a bright future for them. He is excited about the opportunity to develop a new strategic focus at Meyer and work alongside youth and community to help create their vision for educational success.

Michael began his career as a youth outreach coordinator for a rural farmworker community in eastern Washington. He then spent 10 years working in higher education at Washington State University Vancouver and Linfield College before transitioning to grantmaking at Northwest Health Foundation and supporting Latinx student success at the Oregon Department of Education.

Michael earned his bachelor's degree in zoology and ethnic studies, and a master’s in public affairs from Washington State University. He currently serves on the Reynolds School District board.

A self-described nerd, he consumes all sorts of science fiction media. He spends most of his free time with his family: his wife, two children and their fur baby, Duke. He enjoys teaching taekwondo in east Multnomah County.

Michael joined Meyer in March 2024.
